This is a really informal update….I’m really tired and my picture were not uploading. So here is my update with ONLY words….wish I had pictures to go along with it.
A landscape of where I am in Capetown:
First of all the first thing I noticed that was different here is that they drive on the wrong side of the road! The left side that is…I am still getting used to it. Thank the Lord I am not driving, otherwise I’d be dead. Every home and building here seems to have a wall around it with spikes or barbed wire on top of them. Pretty vicious if you ask me. Everyone here is pretty up tight about security. The homes ALL have security systems along with gates on all the doors and windows. I felt like I was going to jail when I first got here, so really you don’t need to worry about me!
There are no SUV’s here. Small is the way to go, along with the BMW’s and Mercedes! Plenty of those around. I think they’re a cheaper car here.
I took the Taxi to school the past two days. I will admit, I was a little nervous getting into the white rickety van. The first day I was the only one in the van, but today there were three other ladies who happen to all be speaking in Afrikaans. hmmm…don’t know that language yet. I only have to travel about a mile down the road to get to school, so it’s only about a 7 minute drive.
So I can’t wait for you to see the absolutely gorgeous pictures I took today and yesterday. Yesterday we went to Robben Island to see the prison site of Nelson Mandela. We had to take a 45 minute boat ride across the ocean to get to the island. HUGE waves. glad that I don’t get seasick very easily.
.It’s amazing how Americanized this place is. I was expecting a big city which it is definitely. however I did not know that I’d be watching American television and American movies and listening to American music! seriously…we’re everywhere. I wanted to get more African influence in my life….
Tell me if this did not make any sense to you….
Cheers,
anna
